SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A federal appeals court says the parents of a woman killed in a mall shooting can't speak at the sentencing of a man who sold a handgun to the teenage killer.
Ken and Sue Antrobus of Cincinnati, parents of Vanessa Quinn, wanted to make an appearance in U.S. District Court on Monday to urge a federal judge to impose the maximum sentence on the man who illegally sold a handgun to Sulejman Talovic.
Talovic, 18, shot nine strangers, killing five, at the Trolley Square mall on Feb. 12 before dying in a shootout with police.
The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that Quinn wasn't technically the victim of the illegal sale. Mackenzie Glade Hunter, 20, awaits sentencing on that charge.
The court noted that while Hunter illegally sold a handgun to a minor, Talovic reached 18 by the time of the mall shooting.
