SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The eared grebes of the Great Salt Lake are dying from avian cholera, a disease that is likely killing the waterway's ducks and gulls, experts say.

Division of Wildlife Resources migratory game bird expert Tom Aldrich says about 1,500 bird carcasses have been found along the lake's southern shore.

Aldrich says outbreaks of the disease occur on the lake every few years since the 1990s. Confirmed in grebes, duck and gull carcasses are now being sent to a Wisconsin lab for testing.

Avian cholera is a blood poisoning that spreads when birds are overcrowded and food supplies short.
