HEBER CITY — The criminal case against Greg Peterson in Wasatch County has officially been closed.
Last week, a 4th District judge signed a motion to dismiss one count of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
In the motion to dismiss, deputy Wasatch County attorney McKay King wrote, "in the interest of justice this case be dismissed. The basis for this request is that the office has received notice that the defendant is deceased."
The larger criminal case against the former GOP activist and businessman in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City had not been dismissed as of Tuesday, though District Attorney Sim Gill had previously indicated that that would happen.
Peterson, 37, had been ordered to stand trial on 25 charges, including 10 counts of forcible sexual abuse, seven counts of object rape, three counts of rape, and one count each of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, burglary and sexual battery. He was accused of raping or sexually assaulting women he met at church activities or on online dating sites that catered to LDS singles.
Four days after posting $2 million bail, Peterson was found dead Oct. 23 in his Heber City cabin where several of his alleged attacks took place. Authorities say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
