OGDEN — On the last day of fire season, a brush fire sparked in Ogden Canyon.
The fire began burning just after 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon off the side of a hiking trail, Ogden City Fire Deputy ChiefMatthew Schwenk said.
According to a press release from the Ogden City Fire Department, a witness reported seeing two juveniles running toward a neighborhood west of the area.
Deputy Chief Mathew Schwenk of the Ogden department said crews aren't sure if the pair started the fire, but investigators are looking for them as they follow up all leads in the case. The fire is being investigated by the Ogden City Police Department and the Ogden fire marshal.
Ten units from multiple agencies fought the fire, including a Forest Service helicopter.
The flames traveled uphill, and a breeze moved the flames on the north side of the canyon eastward. About 40 acres had burned as of Sunday evening. No structures were threatened.
Schwenk said the fire's growth is "somewhat limited" as the north side of the canyon's terrain is rocky with little brush and vegetation. Preventative measures are being taken from allowing it to reach the more vegetated east side. Cooler temperatures are also aiding in retarding the fire.
"Even though we've had a little bit of moisture in the last week or so, it's still very dry," Schwenk said. "Today is actually the last day of the fire season, of course, we're going out with a fire."
Crews will stay through the night, though they will cease work until daylight hours.
Ogden's 12th Street funnels into Ogden Canyon. Crews said the fire seems to have started relatively close to the road.
The canyon is expected to remain open throughout the night.
