MAGNA — Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured in an auto accident Saturday night on state Route 201.

Police say a Toyota Highlander pulled out in front of a Mazda Protege near the intersection of state Route 202 about 10:10 p.m.

The 20-year-old driver of the Mazda swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash but broadsided the Highlander.

The driver of the highlander, Joseph Rawls, 53, of Lehi, and the front-seat passenger of the Mazda, Beverly Maestas, 22, of Tooele, died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the Mazda and two other passengers were transported to Intermountain Medical Center and University Hospital with serious to critical injuries, police said.

Police said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor.
