SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Sandy man who allegedly kidnapped a teenager and then told her family in a text message that he would protect and care for her has been charged with the crime.

Prosecutors charged the 19-year-old yesterday with second-degree felony kidnapping in 3rd District Court.

Court papers say the man told the girl, who was his girlfriend, that he would kill or rape her if she ever cheated on him. He allegedly snatched her Tuesday and was headed to Mexico.

The girl left behind a note for family asking them to search for her if they ever traveled to Mexico. She also sent a text message to a cousin saying she was frightened and wanted to come home.

Police say the girl's mother got a text message from the alleged kidnapper Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators tracked the message to New Mexico, where the pair were eventually found.
