SNOWBIRD — A year ago, on Independence Day, a very different kind of summer was shaping up. At the Snowbird ski resort, the best snow season on record was just coming to an end. We're at the other extreme this Fourth of July.
Last year, there was an 86-inch base at mid-mountain, and thousands of people rode up the tram for a chance to ski on July 4 for only the third time in resort history.
"I love the variation. It would be boring if it was always the same," said resident Polly Coleman.
A year ago, it was downright liberating as snow riders showed up in their red, white and blue. This year is more tranquil, and all of the red, white, blue and purple is exploding on the hillsides.
As lifelong residents, Polly and Dennis Coleman have experienced these extremes before, but not quite like this 12-month swing.
"It changes from year to year. But, it seems to be getting warmer every year, that's for sure," Dennis said.
Even if you can't ride the snow on skis or snowboards in the upper basin, you can still have a lot of fun. You can take the tram up, bring your mountain bike up or even try a mountain scooters.
"This year is a pretty different scene," said Emily Moench with Snowbird Resort. "The snow is all gone already, and we're enjoying our summer activities."
But, for the folks up here today, that's just perfect.
"It's nice and cool up here. That's what i'm here for is the cool temperatures," said Pete Chapman who was in town from Albuquerque. "The scenery is wonderful. I like the high alpine environment."
