(KSL News) A Butler Middle School teacher today received a big surprise and a nice-sized check to go with it.
The Milken Family Foundation presented history teacher Jennifer Van Haaften with a national educator award, a prize that comes with a $25,000 check.
Only 80 teachers across the country win the award, and Van Haaften was the only Utah teacher to win this year.

Van Haaften has been a teacher for 13 years and was instrumental in making Butler Middle School one of the nation's First Amendment schools.
Van Haaften will get her check next spring.
The Milken foundation honors teachers for their talent, accomplishments and long-range potential.
