SALT LAKE CITY — Despite poor organization and financial problems in previous years, the Salt Lake Marathon saw about 7,000 participants running through the streets of Salt Lake Saturday.
Runners said they enjoyed their courses, and were provided plenty of water — a complaint from previous years. The full marathon was ran by 1,500 men and women, and the women's race was won by a woman who registered the night before the race.
Devra Vierkant, a Sandy resident, won the women's medal coming in just under 2 hours and 55 minutes.
"My friend called me last night, and said, ‘you wanna do it tomorrow?' And I said okay," Vierkant said.
Fritz Van De Kamp, who lives in Millcreek, won the men's marathon race, crossing the finish line under 2 hours and 26 minutes from the time he started.
"I really don't ever look backwards, they say I had a long way, but that wouldn't change the way I race," Van De Kamp said.
Many more ran the half marathon, which had 5,500 runners total.
