HERRIMAN — Unified police responded to two high schools Wednesday following a threat of a gun or possible shooting.
About 1:20 p.m., police received a 911 call. The anonymous caller told dispatchers he had just received a call from another person who was going to either Riverton or Herriman High School to "shoot the place up," said Unified Police Sgt. Justin Hoyal. The caller, who sounded like a teenage male, then hung up as the call was transferred to Unified police and he did not call back
The call was traced to a pay phone at a gas station at 1300 West and 12600 South. No one was there when officers arrived.
Jordan School District spokesman Steven Dunham said police felt the threat wasn't serious enough for the schools to go into a full lockdown, but instead went into a "shelter in place" plan, meaning there was controlled access as to who got into school and who left.
Riverton High School normally lets out for the day at 2:25 p.m. The release was delayed until 2:30 p.m. as officers secured the area.
Herriman High School then waited for those officers to move to their building where school was let out for the day at 2:45 p.m., Durham said.
As of 3 p.m. no gunman was found and no one had been arrested.
A message from the Jordan School District was posted on the Herriman City Facebook page.
"Two of our high schools were placed on a limited lock down by the Unified Police Department. All students from Riverton and Herriman High will be delayed a few minutes in arriving home. All students are safe and police are investigating the situation."
