SANDY, Utah (AP) -- Construction on a project that includes two big-box stores in Sandy is officially underway. Crews began work on Friday at Sandy's gravel pit.

The land is considered one of the state's most disputed pieces of property.

Hundreds of residents have been trying to block the development, located at 9000 South and 1000 East, for more than a year. Their case even ended up at the Utah Supreme Court -- twice.

However, the blockade ended in November when Sandy voters approved the development. It includes a Super Wal-Mart, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, several smaller retailers, restaurants and more than three-hundred housing units and a park.
