SOUTH JORDAN — Mayor W. Kent Money is resigning after accepting a new work assignment with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He and his family will be moving to New Zealand where he will be involved in the development of church properties there. “My family and I look forward with great anticipation to this new phase in our lives,” Money said.
Money, who has been mayor for 10 years, will step down effective Feb. 1, 2012. He has two years left on his current term.
“I truly love South Jordan and have tried with all my heart to serve my neighbors and friends of this great city; however, with the acceptance of this new assignment, it is in the best interest of the city to have a highly-qualified person appointed to serve as the city’s mayor until then next general election,” Money said.
Money and the City Council will make a formal statement at the Dec. 6 council meeting about the process of selecting a candidate to fill the position.
The council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, on 1600 W. Towne Center Dr.
