OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Ogden police have recovered two stolen bronze statues, including one that had been missing for years and had been replaced.
On Friday, police arrested Seth David Peterson, 21, Clearfield, for the March 4 theft of "Boy With Bicycle."
Following news stories about the recovery of that statue, a man returned "Ice Cream Boy" to police.
Police Lt. Dave Tarran said the man reported he found the statue two or three years ago at the top of 36th Street, and took it home and put it in his yard.
"I'm sure he didn't realize that it had been stolen," Tarran said. "Once he did, he was a responsible citizen and we now have it back."
"Ice Cream Boy" and "Boy With Bicycle" were among 16 bronze statues donated to Ogden in 2001 to help decorate downtown for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Each statue is valued at around $3,000.
The first statue to be stolen, "Boy With Flute," is still missing. Weber Pathways, stewards of the statues, offered a reward for information about the vandalism four years ago.
"Ice Cream Boy was the second to come up missing," but the first to be replaced, Tarran said.
"An anonymous person had found an identical statue while in California," he said. "The city had placed it on the pedestal where the original one had been stolen from."
Helene Liebman, executive director of Weber Pathways, said she's not sure what her group will do now that there are two "Ice Cream Boy" statues.
Tarran believes "Boy With Bicycle" was damaged beyond repair, but Liebman said, "We'll work with Ogden to replace him or to fix him up."
