John Daley ReportingAn old ramp exit, semi-trucks and, apparently, speed -- all are common denominators in a series of truck accidents that happened at the same spot in Ogden connecting two major Utah thoroughfares.
When I-15 in Salt Lake County was rebuilt a few years ago, engineers redesigned all the on and off-ramps to make them safer. But older exits can be tricky, as yet another truck discovered yesterday.
Yesterday the trailer from a jack-knifed semi came crashing off a freeway overpass. The truck, carrying apples, was heading southbound on I-15 when it went to take the I-84 east exit and crashed on the bridge.
Sgt. Mike McKay, Utah Highway Patrol: "It's come around the corner too fast. It appears the load has shifted and overturned the trailer."
For state troopers the scene has become a familiar one. UDOT reports four similar truck accidents at that exit since 1999, three of them involved speed, including one almost identical to yesterday's.
It was at the same exact place more than six years ago. Two trucks, also carrying apples, collided at the Riverdale Exit. One semi went over the edge of the ramp and landed on the other.
With all four of the truck accidents we looked at since 1999, no one was killed, which is quite remarkable considering the fact that you've had trailers falling from the overpass down to lanes of traffic down below.
