SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A celebrated Utah poet and long-time scholar has died after a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Utah poet laureate Ken Brewer died yesterday evening at his home in Providence. A Utah State University spokesman says he was surrounded by close family and friends.

He was 64.

Brewer retired from Utah State in 2001, where he taught writing, poetry and literature for 32 years. In 2003, he was named poet laureate by then-Governor Mike Leavitt. He was only the second Utah poet to be named to the position.

Brewer has published several books including, "The Place In Between," and "Lake's Edge."
