(KSL News) Police say a 19-year-old young man was beaten to death with a metal rod late Friday night. The 18-year-old accused of killing him is now in jail.
Police say Christopher Hewitt took two acquaintances to the Neffs Canyon trailhead at the north end of Olympus Cove Friday night. Officers say without being provoked, Hewitt pulled out a metal pipe and began beating the young men.
Nineteen-year-old Benjamin Perkins-Link was killed. The other young man, Seth Coleman, was able to get away.
Hewitt left the scene and went home, where officers say he discussed what happened with his family and then turned himself in.
Officers booked him into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
