TOOELE -- Dozens of people in Tooele returned to their homes overnight after being forced to evacuate when crews hit a mis-marked underground gas line.

Tooele City Fire Chief David Gillette said crews were digging along Main Street just before 6 p.m. when they hit the line.

"The gas ended up getting into the sewer system and it was traveling down the sewers and getting into homes, so we had to evacuate homes," Gillette explained.

About 40 homes and two apartment buildings were evacuated.

People were let back into their homes around midnight.
