MIDWAY, Wasatch County — A Heber City man drowned Sunday night at Deer Creek Reservoir after spending nearly 10 minutes underwater.

Francisco Peralta, 43, was swimming about 20 feet from the shore around 7:40 p.m. when his acquaintances saw him go under the water, Wasatch County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jared Rigby said. They called 911 and emergency personnel before diving in after the man.

"They did find him and brought him up," Rigby said. "That's actually what helped us find him so fast."

It believed Peralta was under the water for approximately 10 minutes. Rigby said the water in the area was around 10 to 15 feet deep, but very dark.

Efforts were made to revive the man at the scene and en route to Heber Valley Medical Center, but Rigby said he was "extremely critical" at the scene. Around 10 p.m., it was confirmed that the man had died.

Peralta had apparently been drinking and not wearing a flotation device at the time he entered the water.
