SALT LAKE CITY -- Though UDOT has warned drivers of holiday traffic this weekend, staying safe and on-schedule can go more smoothly by keeping a few things in mind.
Know what to expect
- Check traffic status online before
- If necessary, find alternative routes
- Download a GPS app that shows traffic status live

Avoid driving during peak hours
- Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday and Monday evening, Memorial day weekend
- Leave a day early or late from your destination
Have a plan for entertainment, especially for children
- Audio books
- Podcasts
- A variety of music
- Handheld games
- Movies
- Classic travel games (I spy, the alphabet game, etc.)
- Books (if motion sickness is not a problem)
Limit bathroom stops
- Drink plenty of water the day before, and up to an hour before, and then regulate liquid intake while traveling
- Avoid soda and other sugary drinks
