SALT LAKE CITY -- Though UDOT has warned drivers of holiday traffic this weekend, staying safe and on-schedule can go more smoothly by keeping a few things in mind.

Know what to expect

  • Check traffic status online before
  • If necessary, find alternative routes
  • Download a GPS app that shows traffic status live

Avoid driving during peak hours

  • Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday and Monday evening, Memorial day weekend
  • Leave a day early or late from your destination

Have a plan for entertainment, especially for children

  • Audio books
  • Podcasts
  • A variety of music
  • Handheld games
  • Movies
  • Classic travel games (I spy, the alphabet game, etc.)
  • Books (if motion sickness is not a problem)

Limit bathroom stops

  • Drink plenty of water the day before, and up to an hour before, and then regulate liquid intake while traveling
  • Avoid soda and other sugary drinks
