BYU's Jimmer Fredette wins Naismith Award

PROVO -- BYU senior point guard Jimmer Fredette is the winner of the 2011 Naismith Award, given to the nation's best basketball player.

In his senior year, Fredette averaged 28.5 points a game, led the Cougars to their third Mountain West Conference title in four years and to their first Sweet 16 appearance in 30 years.

This is the first time that a BYU Cougar has won the award. Danny Ainge won the Wooden Award in 1981, but lost the Naismith to Virginia's Ralph Sampson.
