FM 100’s Jill Atwood ReportingA recent women's financial seminar in Salt Lake City brought the ladies out by the thousands. It seems with Christmas behind us, everyone is eager to control their debt and start saving, and today women find themselves more in the financial mix then ever before.

All of the women in the room have something in common, they have decided to be wealthy. The first step, according to New York Times best selling author Richard Paul Evans, is getting control of your money.

Conference Teaches Women About Finances

Richard Paul Evans Author, "The Five Lessons": "Most of them will be providing for their families, in fact solely providing for their families. If you look at a group of women can you tell which woman is the single mom? Which one is in debt? Which woman handles the household money? And which one will suddenly find herself very much on her own? Richard Paul Evans Author, "The Five Lessons": "Like the woman who emailed me the other day and said her husband had an affair and was divorcing her, had hid all their money, and she had no idea how much they were worth. She knew they were worth millions, but he's claiming they're broke. Know first what you're worth. Know where it comes from and where it is going."

The advice seems basic, yet year after year more women than men find themselves below the poverty line. With the lines further blurring between homemaker and breadwinner, women have to be more responsible.

Diana Chantrill, Seminar Attendee: "They don't do things for themselves and finally when they get to a point that they recognize that they are important to, they can sometimes over-indulge in shopping needlessly."
