Alex Cabrero ReportingSomething happened in the city of Sunset today that has happened only one other time in Utah history. It's a sign things are changing, and Sunset residents want the change.
In November Tim Isom won the Sunset mayoral race by almost double the votes, making him only the second black mayor in Utah history.
Tim Isom, Sunset Mayor: "I appreciate the city for giving me the opportunity to serve you, and I promise to do the best to my ability."
While his daughter seems to already be okay with dad's new position, his mother still can't believe it.
Eunice Isom: “We’ll give him all the support he needs, ha ha!”
She knows her son can do a good job, but 39 years ago when they moved to Utah, she didn't think others would give him the chance.
Eunice Isom: "It wasn't very kind to us. We were stuck in a motel for six weeks with our family. Nobody wanted to rent us a home and they didn't want to sell us one."
Now her little boy is the big leader.
Tim Isom: "I think about that, the stories my mom and dad told me, and I contrast that to this and think, hmmm... That's why I think they never would've imagined that, 39 years ago, their son could be a mayor or hold any other political office in Utah."
But all that's history. The biggest challenge now, besides his four children of course, is to grow his city’s economic base.
Tim Isom: “Have things changed? Most definitely.”
Sunset council members Fred Childs and Ricky Carlson were also sworn in this afternoon.
