SALT LAKE CITY — A food hall located in Salt Lake's Granary District known for its variety of food vendors is once again hosting an outdoor movie series throughout the summer.

For the second year in a row, Woodbine Food Hall is partnering with Utah Film Center for its "Movies in the Alley" series.

Popular and beloved classic films will be shown once a month during the four-month series, beginning this Friday with 1987's fairy tale adventure "The Princess Bride."

Despite the outdoor movie screening event's branding, it's not the sort of "alley" you may be thinking of.

"It's an event space that's turfed outside," said Emmily Jones, general manager of Woodbine Food Hall.

Jones, who took over as general manager at Woodbine in 2024, said she'd attended several Utah Film Center outdoor screening events, and with the relationship she had previously built with the organization, she thought a similar activation may work at the food hall.

"It just felt like such a great spot to bring Utah Film Center in and do these movies here," she told KSL.

The partnership resulted in a somewhat mini outdoor movie series last summer to see if the idea would catch on with the community.

"We did two movies just to kind of crowd surf the idea, basically, and see how it worked out; it worked out really great," she said.

One of those two movies was the 1998 local cult classic "SLC Punk."

"It was so cool to see the community come together in that one specifically," Jones recalled.

The food hall and Utah Film Center made a few fine-tune adjustments from last summer's test run and are back with a four-movie lineup aimed to cater to a variety of cinema enthusiasts.

"The film center is thrilled to partner with Woodbine Food Hall on another season of outdoor films in the Granary District," said Russell Roots, director of film exhibition, in a statement. "Their alleyway is one of the most unique spaces we've programmed, and you can't beat all of the amenities that the neighborhood has to offer. Dinner, drinks, and a cult film all in the same location? What's not to love?"

Opened in 2022, Woodbine Food Hall at 545 W. 700 South has become a destination to try a variety of food options with a range of between eight to 10 vendors on site, seven days a week.

For those who plan to attend Friday's showing, tickets are $5 and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis on the grass, and guests are encouraged to bring camp chairs, the food hall said.

The remainder of the summer's movie lineup includes the following titles:

  • July 3 – "Jaws"
  • Aug. 7 – "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
  • Sept. 4 – "Office Space"

Seating opens at 8 p.m., and films will start at sundown.

Jones said the "Movies in the Alley" series aligns with the food hall's purpose of creating opportunities for community and connection.

"I think this is framed in such a great way, where it's like families, dates, group friend night; it's everything — girls night out, it could be anything," she added.
