WEST JORDAN -- The Jordan School District says it's taking a fight video posted on YouTube very seriously, even though the fight did not take place on school grounds.
The video shows two girls punching it out on a driveway, while others stand around encouraging them on. Both girls in the fight were attending West Jordan Middle School at the time, as were many of the students watching.
"Part of our policy is that even spectators, people that tried to record this or post them, they can be suspended for that," said Jordan District Spokesperson Steven Dunham.
Principals at West Jordan Middle School noticed the video online two days after it was posted on Dec. 17, 2010, although they say the actual fight took place months earlier.
"We bring the students in and have a sit-down chat with them so that we know if there (are) issues that need to be resolved, we can resolve them so it does not become an issue at the school," said Dunham.
He says these particular principals are very good at knowing what students have struggles, and they monitor social media sites to see if there are issues being brought up online.
"On their own initiative they are very proactive," Dunham said. "They look for opportunities to monitor social networking sites so they can diffuse situations before they have an opportunity to creep back into the school learning environment."
The district won't discuss disciplinary action of students, but one of the students involved in the fight is no longer attending West Jordan Middle school. Dunham wouldn't say if her departure was in any way related to the fight.
