SALT LAKE CITY -- Don Hale, the man who opened the first Hires Big H restaurant in Salt Lake City back in 1959, has died. He was 93.
Hale was in the food business his whole life. He started working in the family grocery store when he was about 11 years old. He loved his restaurant, and he kept working into his late 80s.
Hires is still run by the Hale family and has several locations now. The original store still has "car hop" service.
Hale died at his Salt Lake home Saturday morning from natural causes; his family was with him.
