SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah coach Kyle Whittingham mentioned the need to upgrade the program as they transition into the PAC-12 in the 2011 season. One early report is indicating that he is doing just that.
Tom Dienhart, a sports writer for Rivals.com, is reporting that the Utes are expected to hire Norm Chow as offensive coordinator and Tim Davis as offensive line coach. The hires are expected to happen soon.
For Norm Chow, this would provide an opportunity to return to his alma mater. Chow was a two-year starter at offensive guard for the Utes (1965-67).
Chow led BYU's offensive attack from 1982 to 1999, including the Cougars' national championship season in 1984. He has taught a very impressive list of quarterbacks over the years, including Steve Young, Philip Rivers, and Robbie Bosco, as well as Heisman Trophy winners Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, and Matt Leinart.
Chow has been UCLA's offensive coordinator since 2008.
Tim Davis is no stranger to the Utah football program. He was the offensive line coach for the Utes from 1990 to 1997 and was key to the success of Utah's rushing attack.
Davis is currently the offensive line coach for the University of Minnesota.
If this report is true, it could have a huge impact on the Utes, both on the field and in recruiting. The coaching experience brought to the table would be priceless, and with Chow's track record of quarterbacks that he has coached, the Utes would be able to recruit head-to-head with the other PAC-12 schools.
