SOUTH JORDAN -- South Jordan resident Richard Davis' helping hands might not be dainty, but they are dedicated to serving his community, one hat at time.

High 5 for knitting grandpa

Davis, known as "the knitting grandpa," has made and distributed some 800 hats in the last year. For that, we honored him with a KSL High 5.

Davis learned to knit from watching his wife. "She made the hats and she is getting arthritis in her hands. She wanted to make some for the grandkids for Christmas, so I made some floppy, ugly things at first," he explained. Now, he said, "I think they're pretty cute."

He has perfected his talent and even developed a system, of sorts. "I have three colors for boys, three colors for girls," he said. "On a good day in the wintertime I can make seven baby hats in a day."

He can't stand to just sit there and not help people.

–Randi Weight

He shares his gift with new babies and parents. "I give them to McKay Dee, Davis County, Mt. Pleasant Hospital," he told us.

Randi Weight nominated him for the High 5. "He can't stand to just sit there and not help people," she said.

His wife, Carolee Davis, said, "We saw a lady and her husband pushing a baby this fall and he said, ‘You need a hat for that baby. Wait right here!' And he ran back to the car and he came back with a couple of hats."

He keeps them in a bag in the back seat of his car, ready to give even while on the go. Davis is a man who knows how to make others feel warm both inside and out.

To say thank you for his service, our High 5 partner Les Schwab presented him with a gift certificate.
