OREM, Utah (KSL News Services) – Utah Valley State College has found a unique way to get its students to pay their parking and library fines while helping those in need. They’re donating crates and in some cases boxes of food to pay their library and parking fines at the school.

UVSC Assistant Library Director Kimberly Rollins says the food for fines program is really popular with the students. Each year students donate more food but no one is sure if that’s because there are more fines or if students are being more generous.

She also says the first year they promoted the program, the school collected 700 cans. Last year the school received more than 2400 cans of food.

Each can of food pays off one dollar of the fine.
