SALT LAKE CITY -- The construction of the new U.S. District Courthouse in Salt Lake City is set to begin in January of 2011.
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which helps manage and support the basic functioning of federal agencies, received the $186 million dollars in funding to get the project moving.
The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014.
The new 409,397 square foot building will be located on a site directly adjacent to the west of the existing Frank E. Moss Courthouse, which has exceeded its original design capacity from both a space and security perspective.
The courthouse will includes seven district and three magistrate courtrooms, along with 14 chambers and office support spaces on ten floors above grade. The building will also house the U.S. Marshals Service, and U.S. Probation.
There will be two floors below grade which will contain parking and building support space.
The new courthouse will be built to achieve gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), which verifies that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving overall performance.
"GSA is thrilled to see this project move forward and to be able to provide the Courts the space they need to continue to do their work effectively and efficiently," said GSA Rocky Mountain Regional Administrator Susan Damour. "We believe that building green will deliver lasting progress toward modernizing our nation's infrastructure and this gold LEED certified building will help us get that much closer."
Local contractor Okland Construction will construct the project and Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects will provide construction administration services.
The GSA supplies products and communications for U.S. government offices, provides transportation and office space to federal employees, and develops government-wide cost-minimizing policies, and other management tasks.
