SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Moroni police say a driver accused of fatally striking a girl as she rode her bike to school faces charges of failure to yield and driving without a license.
Police Chief Tim Hunsaker told The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday that the driver is a 53-year-old Mexican man in the United States illegally who could face deportation. He says the driver was traveling less than 25 mph when he struck 11-year-old Heather Dawn Christensen on Thursday. Hunsaker says it appears to be "an unfortunate accident."
The girl's mother, Ruth Christensen, says she also believes it was a "tragic accident" and that she has forgiven the driver.
