(KSL News) Key members of the Food and Drug Administration were at the University of Utah today to hear more about the science of customized medicine.
They're in Utah at the invitation of Sen. Robert Bennett. The FDA members are here to explore the future of what is called "critical path" research.
The science takes a potential drug or device from the laboratory bench all the way to an ultimate therapy.
Researchers hope eventually to use an individual patient's DNA to find exactly what works just for them. Bennett said, "Where we're going is to check you out and say ‘this drug will work for you, but not for the person next to you.'"
Sen. Bennett says this new research initiative should lead to better medical products and lower health care costs.
He secured $750,000 from Congress last year to help the University's critical path research.
