SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake City council is considering increasing the fines for residents and business owners who don't shovel their sidewalks of snow in a timely manner.
The current penalty for failing to shovel snow or sleet from the sidewalk within 24 hours is $75 for both residential and commercial properties. Under the new ordinance, property owners would face fines of $50 to $200 on an escalating scale.
For any property with street front footage of 200 feet or less:
- $50 for each day hail, snow, or sleet is not removed from sidewalks within 24 hours
- $75 for each day it is not removed from sidewalks within 48 hours
- $100 for each day sidewalks are not cleared within 72 hours
For any property with street front footage of more than 200 feet:
- $100 for each day hail, snow, or sleet is not removed from sidewalks within 24 hours
- $150 for each day it is not removed within 48 hours
- $200 for each day sidewalks aren't cleared within 120 hours
The city says this is part of an effort to improve year-round mobility and pedestrian safety.
The council will hold a public hearing on the issue tonight at 7 p.m. at the City & County Building. If approved, the ordinance changes will become effective Monday, Nov. 1.
