SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Parents in the Canyons School District are getting letters to let them know of a presidential back-to-school speech on Sept. 14. The letter being sent home with students also includes an opt-out form if the parents don't want their kids to watch.

"While we wanted to make (the president's speech) available to everyone at the school, if parents didn't want their children to participate then we wanted to be proactive and letting them know they can send in that opt-out form," said district spokesman Jeff Haney.

Haney says the last time President Obama gave a similar speech to school children they received phone calls from hundreds of parents that were concerned about their children watching the address. Haney says any students that bring back a completed opt-out form will participate in a separate educational activity while the rest of the students watch the speech.
