SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- An 18-month-old girl was hospitalized after she was hit by a vehicle backing out of a parking lot in South Salt Lake.

It happened yesterday evening at the 3400 South block of 300 East.

South Salt Lake police Sergeant Jack Carruth says witnesses told police a woman was leaving an apartment complex when the vehicle struck the girl and dragged her.

Police say witnesses yelled at the driver to stop, and then pulled the baby from beneath the vehicle.

Carruth says the driver then fled. However, she was later taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County jail.

Police say the little girl suffered minor injuries.

Carruth described the incident as an accident.
