PROVO -- Brigham Young University unveiled its new electric streamliner racecar Thursday. The vehicle has been in development for the past six years.
A streamliner is a long, thin drag racer that runs off electricity and weighs less than 1,100 pounds.
BYU's School of Technology will race the car on the Salt Flats next week in hopes of setting a record for speed.
"The car is capable of over 200 miles an hour. These races will look to do something in the 180-mile-an-hour range," said Jeff Baxter, the racecar team captain. "We'll look at pushing it harder than that in our September races."
There's no official record in the lightweight electric vehicle category, so BYU hopes to be the first.
