(KSL News)-- A car exploded in the parking lot of a busy crowded shopping center in Midvale this afternoon.
The back part of this BMW was blown away. It belonged to a plumber who left an acetylene torch inside and had gone shopping. A valve apparently was slightly open and the car filled with acetylene gas.
When the owner returned and used a keyless remote to open his car; it triggered the explosion. Chunks of medal flew all over the parking lot.
The shopping center was busy, but fortunately no one was hurt.
Capt. Jay Thomas, Midvale Fire Dept.:"We're very lucky; that's all I can say, we're very lucky."
A bomb squad came to make sure it wasn't a bomb. They're calling it an accident and no charges will be filed.
