SANTAQUIN, Utah (AP) -- A single-vehicle accident on Interstate 15 near Santaquin has killed two teens and injured a man as they were driving from southern Utah to Kearns.

Saturday evening, the Utah Highway Patrol identified the teens as 18-year-old Darrin James Elwood, from the Salt Lake area, and 17-year-old Jordan Blias, from Kearns.

The injured man was identified as 60-year-old William Giodowski, from Sandy.

UHP Trooper Todd Johnson says they were in a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire when it drifted off the roadway around 5:45 a.m. Saturday morning near milepost 243. The car hit a guardrail, which impaled the car.

Johnson says the 18-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger in the front seat died at the scene. The driver was wearing a seat belt and the passenger was not.

It appears the driver may have fallen asleep.

Giodowski, who is believed to be a hitchhiker, was life flighted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo with minor injuries.

Northbound traffic was diverted off the 242 exit and the two northbound travel lanes were closed for an hour and a half after the accident.
