SALT LAKE CITY -- KSL and other Deseret Media Companies are excited to report our Read Today Summer Reading Challenge has passed a milestone in its first week.
Close to 1,700 Utah kids are logging their minutes on our online tracker.
Those kids have logged a collective total of 284,000 minutes in just seven days.
We've charted the schools with students reading the most minutes so far.
North Star Elementary school in Salt Lake City is in the lead with 9,100 minutes. North Lake Elementary in Tooele is in second place with 6,800 minutes. Academy Park Elementary in West Valley City is sitting in a close third with 6,000 minutes.
The Summer Reading Challenge launched just last week.
Kids from nearly 300 Utah elementary schools are taking part.
We also discovered something interesting. A "mom" who had signed up 28 "kids" turned out to be a group at the South Valley Boys and Girls Club.
A teacher signed up kids in her summer program to keep them making progress.
"They have the accomplishment of doing it, and I could help them at just a small level," said Terra Bueno with the Boys and Girls Club. "But that one step is going to be huge for them in the future."
