SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Transit Authority is set to vote on who will become the next chairman of the organization's board of Trustees. So far, there's only one candidate running: Utah Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper.

At issue is whether Hughes' property in Salt Lake City, which is near the TRAX station on 900 South, is a conflict of interest.

Last year, lawmakers introduced Senate Bill 272, which requires any board member who is either a developer, partner, or owner of a UTA-related development to resign.

Utah activist Clair Geddes says the fact Hughes declared it a possible conflict of interest raises concerns.

Opponents say they've collected about 250 signatures on a petition protesting the vote.

The petition to be presented to trustees doesn't use Hughes' name.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter says Hughes filled out a conflict of interest form, but the property he owns is not a transit-oriented development.

Carpenter also pointed out that Hughes bought the property before the TRAX line was built.

Board members are set to vote on June 23.
