VINEYARD (KSL News Services) -- Construction is now underway on Utah’s newest power plant and it means a lot more than electricity for one community in Utah County. This power plant is designed to supply electricity to thousands of homes around the wasatch front and will reside where Geneva Steel used to stand.
Robert Looper with Summit Vineyard L-L-C says this plant is crucial in keeping up with Utah’s growth. ”It’s just not the suitable transmission to bring that power in from all over the U.S. Transmission is very congested right now so putting the power plant right here in the middle of the load center really helps.”
The plant will give the city of Vineyard a much needed tax base they've been lacking since the steel plant shut down. Vineyard Mayor Randy Farnworth it's way to help pay bills for the city. “You can’t support yourself on just housetops. You gotta have something out there to bring in that revenue so you don’t overtax your constituents.”
Vineyard only has a few small businesses within the city limits. The fate of the Geneva Steel land will be decided in November.
