SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Questar Gas Co. has been awarded a 1 percent rate hike and the ability to charge customers more when the utility installs new gas lines.

The agreement with the Utah Public Service Commission was announced Thursday.

Questar Gas typically files for rate adjustments twice yearly to track fluctuating prices of natural gas, but this rate hike is different. It's meant to cover the costs of operations, not gas.

The regulated utility asked in December for a much larger rate hike, but settled for a smaller one with the ability to charge certain customers incrementally for infrastructure improvements. Questar Gas plans to spend $158 million over the next four years on new gas mains and lines.
