NORTHERN UTAH -- From Utah County to Weber County, major road projects kick into high gear this weekend, and they will impact drivers.

Salt Lake County Closure
10600 S. will be closed westbound between the interchange and S. Jordan Gateway starting on Saturdays at 8 p.m. and ending on Mondays at 5 a.m. for the next four weekends.

The projects include everything from bridge moving to installing power lines and FrontRunner tracks.

The bridge that crosses 10600 South just west of Interstate 15 is for Union Pacific trains. Soon one will be built parallel to it, for FrontRunner, which will run to Provo.

"We've got about 20 different bridge structures we're building for the FrontRunner Provo line, and this is one of the bigger ones on a major artery," says Gerry Carpenter, spokesman for the Utah Transit Authority.

That means every Saturday night in June, at 8 p.m., all westbound lanes on 10600 South will close; eastbound, only one lane will be open. Carpenter knows that's a pain for drivers, but he says it'll be worth it.

"In the end, we'll have a great new commuter rail service from Salt Lake to Provo," Carpenter says.

UTA is also going to close Redwood Road between 8020 South and 8150 South over the weekend.

"That is to run the rails across Redwood for the new Mid-Jordan TRAX line, and that will complete the work on upgrading the crossing there," Carpenter says.

That closure is only this one weekend -- Saturday night to Sunday afternoon -- when Carpenter says there is not as much traffic.

UDOT also has a big closure planned over the weekend along I-15, just south of the Weber-Box Elder county line.

"We've got some power companies who need to put some high voltage power lines over the freeway," says Scott Thompson, spokesman for the Utah Department of Transportation.

Thompson says this is not your typical road project, but it's going to cause more than just delays.

"There will be some full closures, intermittent full closures, while they use some helicopters to actually pull the lines across the freeway," Thompson says.

If you know where you are going this weekend and wonder if there are any road closures, you can contact UDOT at 1-877-222-3757.
