OREM, Utah (AP) -- The Utah Valley University ballroom dance troupe has won the first college dance championship on the ABC show "Dancing With the Stars."

The squad performed a samba routine Tuesday night to high praise by the judges. The team defeated Purdue University.

A week earlier the team beat Rutgers University with a cha cha routine by scoring 29 out of 30 points to advance to the finals.

The team is now preparing to compete in the Blackpool Championship in England, a competition the team has won four times.

The National Dance Council of America ranks the UVU ballroom dancers as the No. 2 formation team nationally.
