SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Peregrine falcons that usually nest in Salt Lake City have apparently been chased off by construction in the downtown area.

Peregrines, once on the endangered species list, have been visiting Salt Lake City since at least the mid-1980s. They have nested for the last few years in a box on the outside of a high-up floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

But renovation work on the Smith building forced workers to board up the box. And ongoing work on the massive City Creek project downtown appears to have forced the birds elsewhere this year.

Officials with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints set up another next box nearby, but no birds have shown interest.
