SALT LAKE CITY-- Utah's meat inspectors have been taken off the budget chopping block.
Lawmakers are backing away from some of the cuts they planned to make because meat packing plans agreed to pay higher fees for the state program, rather than deal with federal inspectors.
Under a tentative deal, the Legislature will restore just under $140 million they planned to cut. That means 12 meat inspectors get to keep their jobs.
