SALT LAKE CITY -- Thieves didn't get away with much cash but did cause a lot of damage in a pair of weekend break-ins at the Salt Lake City Main Branch Library.

Early Sunday morning, someone broke through a window on the library's northeast side and into the atrium. From there, they smashed windows and entered three shops, including Salt Lake Citizen -- a local product store co-owned by Bob Friend.

"It's just stupid," he said. "There are just thousands and thousands of dollars in damages for nine bucks, and I'm sure they didn't do much better in any of the other stores they hit."

Niro Bako owns a café on the northeast side. "You work all the time, and some idiots come and cause more damage than they get money. You feel bad," Bako said.

Workers at the English Garden flower shop were cleaning up broken glass Monday morning. They too said only cash was taken.

Police say the library does have surveillance cameras that run 24 hours a day. They're hoping the video will help detectives identify suspects.
