KSL Team CoverageA day after his talk show tangle with Fox News standard-bearer Bill O'Reilly, Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson says he thinks the O'Reilly brand of journalism is on the decline. Meantime, Anderson is still waiting to hear from the other big Fox name, Sean Hannity, about a potential debate.
KSL has made several calls to Sean Hannity's producer in New York to see where things stand with that debate, but she never called back. Meantime, we got a snapshot of what one might look like last night when the Mayor and O'Reilly wrestled over whether the president should be impeached.
The mayor appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor." The six-minute exchange included some name-calling.
O'Reilly told Mayor Anderson, "You're an irresponsible public official. You're an irresponsible person."
Mayor Anderson said, "You let me know when you're finished there, Bill."
O'Reilly continued, "There's not one Congress person that will introduce an article of impeachment. You can't get anybody to do it because they know you're a kook."
Mayor Anderson replied, "Do you just have guests on your program so you can hear yourself talk? You know, where I'm from, we ask people questions. We give them the courtesy of answering without being interrupted."
"It depends on how kooky you are," O'Reilly answered. "I'm not going to let you say something absolutely insane."
Mayor Anderson said, "This is classic Bill, isn't it, that you invite guests on to call them names."
Mayor Anderson told KSL's "Nightside Project" he was surprised by the name-calling and said O'Reilly didn't have his facts straight. He also said O'Reilly edited the program to make himself look better.
"O'Reilly was classic O'Reilly," Anderson said. "He was rude, he interrupted. He wasn't interested in talking about the substance, about the merits."
Anderson also commented that he thinks that kind of journalism is on the decline. "I don't think we're going to see the Bill O'Reillys and the Rush Limbaughs and the Sean Hannitys much longer," Mayor Anderson said. "I think people realize that they're pretty fact-free, and I think we're getting tired of that kind of uncivil dialogue."
The show generated over 200 comments on ksl.com. M.L. wrote, "It was hilarious. Rocky Anderson is such a loser! That was great." Robert wrote, "FOX has a financial interest in making sure that Hannity/O'Reilly win whatever encounter they participate in. It's just better for ratings."
The entire segment lasted about six minutes and was edited in a couple of places.
