SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The National Security Agency's plan to build a massive data center for intelligence analysis has drawn interest from some of the country's largest construction firms.
More than a dozen contractor teams have announced they are gearing up to submit bids on the $1.7 billion data center.
The players include Salt Lake City-based Jacobsen Construction,which is teaming up with New York-based Turner Construction Co. and Kiewit Co. of Omaha, Neb. Utah-based Layton Construction is also in the running as general contractor; it has teamed up with a Maryland-based company. Okland Construction Company and Big-D Construction also have joint-venture partners with whom they are pursuing contracts.
One of California's largest general contractors announced Monday it was in on the bidding. Webcor Builders says it has teamed up with two partners, Hunt Construction Co. and Watts Constructors.
An official for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, Calif., didn't immediately return a call Monday from The Associated Press on the schedule for hiring a contracting team.
