VERNAL — If you have been wanting to take a whitewater river rafting trip, here are some good local options.

The Green River stretches over 100 miles across the Flaming Gorge and Vernal areas in northeastern Utah. With all that river, there are several different options for difficulty level and trip length that rafters can choose from.

Here are some of the best whitewater river rafting options in this area, according to Dinosaurland officials.

Lodore Canyon

This stretch of river is for more experienced rafters, as it includes the plunge down “Disaster Falls.” Participants will definitely get soaked from whitewater rapids on this trip. Riders can either take five days to float the full 44 miles or can shorten the trip by getting on and off as they desire.

Split Mountain

This 8-mile excursion has its own ups and downs while still being family approved. Split Mountain only takes one day (some do it in half a day) and has a series of three exhilarating rapids. The trip makes its way through Dinosaur National Monument where families can brush up on their dinosaur history.

“One of our tourists’ favorite Green River adventure is a trip through Split Mountain in Dinosaur National Monument,” Uintah County Travel and Tourism director Lesha Coltharp said in a news release. “This 8-mile wonder is full of beautiful scenery accompanied with enough white waters to keep things exciting. It’s perfect for families of all ages. Afterward, they can visit our one-of-a-kind Wall of Bones exhibit.”

Desolation Canyon

Located in a gorge deeper than the Grand Canyon, this 84-mile excursion is fairly calm with only a few low-class rapids. Families of all ages will enjoy the remote river while admiring the stunning views, ancient homesteads and even Native American petroglyphs. There are also white beaches and fun hiking opportunities nearby to explore.
