SANDY — A fast-moving brush fire threatened a dozen homes in Sandy on Monday before it was extinguished.
The fire started around 3:30 p.m. near 10455 S Columbine Circle in the south side of the Dimple Dell gully.
A dozen homes surrounding the gully were threatened as a slight breeze spread the fire north and east, said Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Derek Maxfield.
Homeowner Kaley West recently moved into her home a few months ago. She was headed home from work when she saw the fire.
"I saw this smoke and realized that was my neighborhood. I got closer and it was closer to my backyard," West said. "The firefighters did a really good job. It was really scary watching the whole thing go up."
The fire was quickly contained after burning 8 acres. No structures or homes were damaged.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. Neighbors said they heard fireworks just before they spotted smoke. Maxfield said fireworks were a "very possible" cause.
"With this time of year, that's definitely something that we consider," he said.
